Weaving Glitches – cloth two

Nederlandse versie hier.

Obsessed with the little patterns I found in cloth one, I decided to devote the second cloth to that. But then on sixteen shafts, because my new loom was in. What fascinated me about the patterns was, on the one hand, how some were almost pixel-like, as can occur with graphic glitches. But more importantly, how joining threads through weaving can make so many different textures. As a reference to the weft used, in setting up the warp, I chose to alternate the final patterned lanes in the canvas with the blue, tighter lanes based on the twill technique.

Networked
In the warp I used several variations based on the network weaving technique, in which two or more patterns, each with its own color, are intertwined. In this case it’s three colors, red, green and yellow. I used mercerized yarn (shiny!) for the bolder areas or lanes of the fabric to create more contrast with the blue lanes. In this example, I added a glitch to the tie-up drawing for the purpose of causing happy accidents, nice structures in the weave.

Patterns and glitches
By making variations on the twill in the weft, I got different patterns in the fabric. Where the focus of the design was on the blue lanes, the more colorfull lanes glitched along with them. I had already set up the right-hand lane in the warp quite in an unstructured way, precisely to create a form of chaos.

Shuffle weaving technique
Halfway through the canvas, I decided to keep manipulating the tie-up drawing, which I then kept converting to lift plan. The tie-up drawing is actually for tying the treadles that lift the shafts on a larger loom, but I found that it is an ideal way to design intuitively in weaving software. The shuffle weaving technique was born; I’ll write more about this later!
